Franzen Comes Alive

Yay, Books! – January 15, 2016

January 15, 2016 ·

In case you hadn’t heard, I love books. LOVE THEM. Here are a few book-related things I’m happy about today:

  • The 24 in 48 Readathon: It’s happening tomorrow! There are over 350 participants – AMAZING. And there’s still time to sign up. I’ve picked out what I’m going to try to read. But really, whether you read ten books or ten pages, it’s all about having fun!
  • I have just been informed that there’s a new Helen Phillips coming in 2016! THIS IS SO EXCITING. I loooooooooved The Beautiful Bureaucrat. It’s so wonderful and weird. Her new book, Some Possible Solutions, is a collection of short stories. It’s out May 31st. Which is not that far away, really. I mean, January is already half way over!ย (And if you’ve read The Beautiful Bureaucrat, and/or like weird office books, may I suggest Radio Iris by Anne-Marie Kinney? It’s published by the amazing Two Dollar Radio, a publisher I love so much, I permanently marred my flesh for them.)
  • I received a few books in the mail this week that I’m really excited to read. Okay, I received a lot of books I’m excited to read. But these are the standouts:

Behold the Dreamers by Imbolo Mbue (August 23) Everyone is raving about this book. One of our most anticipated books of 2016 on All the Books!

Everything I Found on the Beach by Cynan Jones (April 5) Loved his book The Dig, also published by the wonderful Coffee House Press.

Septimania by Jonathan Levi (April 5) From the awesome Overlook Press! Since it’s arrival, I have had this song stuck in my head.

Here Comes the Sun by Nicole Dennis-Benn (July 19) Coming from Liveright, who have been just crushing it the last couple years.

  • I just received a digital galley of Death Is Stupid by Anastasia Higginbotham, out April 12 from The Feminist Press at CUNY. I think the title really says it all.

That’s it for today. Hope to “see” some of you at the readathon this weekend!

I kinda wanted to do the 24 in 48 thing, buuuuut…I go kinda dry- and cross-eyed after a couple hours of reading, and then I need to take a couple hours rest, so added to a few other things I have to get done, I know I wouldn’t come close to making it ๐Ÿ˜› But I’m cheering you on, Liberty!

BTW, are there other bookish podcasts (besides All the Books, of course) that you would recommend? I prefer podcasts that are around the same length as AtB – 30-45 minutes. When they start getting up to an hour or more, I just have a hard time paying attention for that long.

I can’t think of any that are any shorter than ours. But I highly recommend Books on the Nightstand, Bookrageous, The Drunk Booksellers. And the other Book Riot podcasts, of course. ๐Ÿ™‚
